I tend to work in series or projects, images that are related somehow. It could be location, subject matter, or concept but somehow the images in a series fit together. That kind of structure keeps me organized. It's a way of working that makes sense to me. It's not that I don't take random images that don't seem to belong anywhere, because I do. Sometimes one of those random images will become the seed for a new project, so that's a good thing. But I always have one or more projects in the back of my mind when I'm out making photographs.
The question becomes, when is a project finished? I was out the other day and made the image above not far from home. I have a project called Arbor that I've been working on for a while, and even though this image may not make it into the final project, I realized I was still working on it whether I knew it or not.
So maybe a project is never finished. Maybe it's done when I'm totally bored with it and have nothing else to say. Maybe it doesn't matter.
More next week.
